Three Floyd's Brewing Company, in Hammond, Indiana, is a small micro-brewery known for turning out some pretty big beers, and the Dreadnaught Double IPA is just one example. I first had the Dreadnaught at a beer tasting in Omaha, and immediately loved it. It pours a nice hazy copper in the glass with two fingers of foamy head that lace pretty well. It's got a strong hoppy floral aroma, but the first thing to hit your lips is pine and citrus. The flavor profile is complex, floral and fruity with a great hoppy bitterness in the finish and just enough malt to hold it up. Everything you would want in a DIPA, though maybe a split-hair under carbonated. If you're looking for a great beer that will hit you right in the back of the tongue, kick your feet up with a Dreadnaught.
Best Drunk: From a tulip glass over a plate of heat-soaked buffalo wings. The first Dreadnaught will compliment the wings perfectly, but at 9.5% ABV the next two or three will numb the pain enough that you won't mind the burn...or the sweat pouring down your back. Share it with a friend...or better yet keep it for yourself and let them drive you home.
