Deschutes Jubelale
I'm barely into sampling this year's seasonal fall and harvest brews, when I spotted the first Holiday beer; Deschutes Jubelale.
Deschutes has been making this winter holiday ale for fifteen years. It's a dark ale, with dark crystal malts, and an ABV of 6.7%. You notice the malt, in the mellow but slightly spicy taste, and the sweetness, but the hops are very definitely there too. I suspect people who tell you they prefer something lighter and hoppier might be pleasantly surprised with this one.
Several years ago, Deschutes began commissioning special art for Jubelale's label and packaging. The artist this year is Tracy Leagjeld from Central Oregon. She's a graphic artist at the Tumalo Art Company; you can see more of Tracy Leagjeld's work on her personal blog and on Tumalo's company Web site. Deschute's is also sponsoring a touring art exhibit of Jubelale label and package art, and even a striking retrospective poster.
Beer blogger Mario at Brewed for Thought has an interesting comparison of last year's Jubelale, and this one. Deschutes Jubelale really is a super ale for this time of year, and I'm going to be very sad to see it go. I shall console myself with buying Deschutes Jubelale as long as it is available.
