Crispin Original Apple Cider: Yuppie Cider Gone Wrong
I picked up a 4-pack of Crispin "original" Hard Apple Cider on a whim. I'm quite fond of hard cider, though I've yet to have one that comes anything like close to the stuff New England farmers make in ceramic jugs
Crispin Cider, or to a pear cider the likes of the no-longer-made Pear Cider at the Westwood Brewery. Crispin Original Apple Cider isn't bad; it's a bit on the sweet side but I tend to favor dry ciders. Crispin makes a dry cider, as well as a sweet. This is the "regular" or medium version. It's made of all natural ingredients, something that they're rather proud of, and has no added preservatives or coloring or sugar or other sweetening; not even unfermented apple juice added after the fermentation is done. It's made with a "premium apple blend," and then cold filtered (to prevent the natural cloudy appearance of fermented apple cider). The ABV is 5%. It's a decent bottled cider, and if you like hard cider, you'll like Crispin, though at a bit over $6.00 for a four-pack, you'd best be pretty sure you like hard cider. I note that they do have plans for expansion, including artisanal ciders.
But—and here's where the "Yuppie Cider Gone Wrong" subtitle comes in—the packaging, and the Crispin Cider Web site both urge us to drink the cider on ice. No, really. Here's the Web site text:
Welcome to the new ice age. The age of Crispin Super Premium, Natural Hard Apple Cider. Serve over a glass of fresh ice and experience crisp, clean pure natural refreshment.
I like to be fair, so I did in fact try Crispin over ice. It was like tasting watered down cold hard cider, not so surprisingly. But I must admit that the marketing around Crispin Cider reminds me more than a little of Zima. And that's probably not a good thing.

I'm personally a big fan of Aspall extra dry - but that one is about $7 per bottle so you really best be sure you like hard cider.

Yuppie Cider gone wrong
Thanks for noticing us. I suspect Yuppie might have negative connotations, but truthfully we are not a smoky pipe, damp jerseys and wet labrador type cider - so we have to accept this "criticism". We are classically inspired, but seriously untraditional in our approach to cider. We hope that our apple wine quality shines through - we make Crispin Cider apple wine from apple juice and not apple juice concentrate, we add no sugars,colorants or preservatives nor do we bulk up the ABV with malt, spirit or grape alcohol. We are not a sweet beer, or a beer alternative and try not to look like one. We're quite happy for anyone to drink Crispin straight up, we prefer it "on the rocks" and we see the global cider renaissance driven by the pure refreshment of drinking cider over ice. We believe that we need to give new cider drinkers a reason to try cider, and over ice has proven compelling. We are just happy for people to be discussing cider, our "forgotten" beverage. We are hosting a cider dinner at Brouwer's Cafe on the 11/11 at 7pm. Chef Eric Draper will share Crispin cider inspired dishes both prepared and paired with our 4 ciders, including our latest Honey Crisp Artisanal Reserve - a "Cloudy" unfiltered cider smoothed with organic honey. Hey Lisa. Pretty much the only way regular cider drinkers in UK, Ireland and rest of world drink cider is over ice. We are following that trend, not setting it!
Whole Foods, QFC are good places to find Honey Crisp. We have some very exciting additions to teh Artisanal Reserves coming out towards the end of the year and early 2010.
